As the month of May marks the start of the summer travel season, the Spencer County Visitors Bureau anticipates a record number of overnight visitors.
“Our county tourism businesses are investing more than $9 million this year,” says Melissa Wilkinson, Executive Director of the Spencer County Visitors Bureau. “With additional lodging plus new and enhanced attractions, we have more for families to do and more places for them to stay.”
Tourism investments for 2011 include:
- 25 new “Rudolph’s Christmas Cabins” and four additional King-size RVs at Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort;
- Four additional cottages at Santa’s Cottages;
- A family Christmas ride and children’s water slides at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari;
- Restoration of the historic Santa Claus statue in Santa Claus, Indiana;
- Restoration of the Daniel Grass Cabin at Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum in Rockport, Indiana;
- On-site confection-making and new varieties of fresh gourmet popcorn at Santa’s Candy Castle;
- Lincoln-era livestock and Native American medicine wheel garden at Buffalo Run Farm, Grill & Gifts; and
- Santa’s Stables, a new business which opened in April 2011.
Santa’s Stables, a new business in the town of Santa Claus, offers family-friendly horseback riding. With 20 horses, a variety of trails, and trained guides, the stables add a different outdoor recreation activity for visitors to the area.
“We are very excited to be part of the growing tourism industry in Spencer County,” says Isaac Horn, part-owner of Santa’s Stables. “With families in mind, we even have Peaches the Pony for small children!”
Spencer County is home to nationally-known attractions such as Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort, and Lincoln’s Indiana Boyhood Home with a national and state park. The Visitors Bureau encourages guests to stay overnight and visit county attractions, shops, and restaurants.
